Been there, done that:
- Yosemite hike from valley floor,
up 4 Mile Trail to Glacier Point, and back down Panorama trail.
This is about the best (looong) day hike I've ever found. It's
about 12 miles total, with about 5000' elevation gain, but you
cross by several waterfalls, including Illuette, Nevada, and Vernal Falls,
get great views of the valley and high country, including the back side
of Half Dome.
- North to Alaska!
I traveled to Alaska in August '96. A friend and I visited Juneau,
kayaked/camped in Glacier Bay where we saw some awesome glacier calving,
drove to MacCarthy and took the hand-pulled trolley-cart over the river,
hiked to the McCarthy Copper Mine at the top of the mountain,
drove the Denali Highway (and suffered one flat tire),
and backpacked in Denali National Park.
Read my trip report.
I plan to go back, bringing Becky with me.
- Finish a Marathon
After publicly declaring my Resolution to run a marathon in '97,
I finally got off my duff to run the California International Marathon
in Sacramento of that year (just a coincidence that it is run in December!).
I was happy to finish, but I sure was sucking wind for the last few miles.
Becky (the "Team Kalon" support crew) helped me keep going.
Read my tedious
mile-by-mile log
if you want to know what it was like.
- Ran a One-Third Marathon with Becky.
We ran the Crested Butte Marathon while
visiting our friend Gretchen Daily on July 4th, 1998. Becky was amazing,
running the longest distance of her life at an altitude of almost 10,000'!
To Do:
- Hike to top of Half Dome in Yosemite.
- Run a Half-Marathon with Becky.
- Kayak in the San Juan Islands.
- Backpack the Grand Canyon of Kauai.
- Hike to top of Mount Whitney.
- Bike ride around Lake Tahoe.
- Backpack the Lost Coast in Mendocino from end to end.
- Climb a mountain -- nothing exotic, just a Shasta/Rainer type experience.
- Traverse the Bay Area Ridge Trail.
- Run another marathon, but faster this time!
Then What?
I don't think I'll be ready to "go", so I'll just have to keep adding
new adventure goals...
